Lives and works on Darug land Western Sydney
Jess Montecinos is a media artist and cat lover based in the vibrant landscape of Darug land, Western Sydney.
Inspired by the rich cultural traditions of her Bolivian heritage, Jess’s work centers on storytelling, particularly the enduring power of folk dances shaped by centuries of resistance, adaptation, and celebration. Her practice draws from the resilience of a people whose cultural expressions have persisted through colonial disruption and continue to evolve with strength and pride.
Using tools like projection mapping, light, and spatial design, Jess brings these stories to life in immersive, contemporary forms. For her, technology is not the inspiration, but a means to honour and reframe cultural memory—bridging past and present, the personal and the collective.
Jess is researching the evolution of Bolivian folk dances and their shifting narratives, particularly how these traditions have adapted in response to colonisation, urbanisation, and globalisation. Through developing new work, she seeks to explore new ways of presenting cultural heritage within diasporic and digital contexts.
